It’s been wonderful of late to enjoy the Inspector Maigret series of books ; a consummate stylist, Simenon moved the genre on from its progenitors efforts ,such as Edgar Allan Poe//Conan Doyle, into the modern format we so enjoy now especially redolent in the work of Mankell re Wallender and Camilleri re Montalbano…If any budding writer wants to learn pace and structure, you cannot do better than read a Maigret !...David Hare’s wonderful appreciation is worth reading to understand Simenon’s influence…
